Changing desktop folders and icons in Gnome/KDE

Something I don't understand here, but probably simple.

In Slackware 10 and previous:
When dragging an application from the menu to desktop to make a shortcut in gnome (dropline) I then logout and change to KDE and get a blank page icon. Also the "start here" Icon in gnome now shows up as a blank page icon...if I clcik on it I get "malformed url" error.
All I want is for this to go away so that I can swith between desktops with same user.
Or should I create a new user for other desktops? no idea really.

Thanks for any advice

All you should have to do is go into properties on the icon/folder and make sure it points to the right place in the directory tree to execute the specified path. You can hit browse to point it to the right place in there. Hope I was a help.

I know I can go to properties, .... what about the "start here" file which now appears in KDE.
In others (suse, mandrake) this would not happen. I'm trying to find a way to set the desktop preferences actually I think? I can't change gnome or kde it seems without screwing the other one all up.
thanks for the reply,

Question

Sorry. I'm not sure if this has ever been answered, but when starting Gnome first time and then changing to KDE I get an unusable "start here" Icon on the kde desktop. How can I have gnome or KDE avoid this mix-up?
Thanks a bunch
