Question changing KDE 3.2 desktop icons?

I am running SuSE 9.0 and KDE 3.2, and when I try to change any the icon for any links on the desktop it doesn't change. If I pick an icon that comes with KDE then it works fine, but it doesn't seem to like my other icons. I have tried converting them from .png to .xpm as well as various different sizes, but no luck. Do they need to be an a particular folder, or what. It doesn't seem like it should be a big deal. I'm stumped.

I am using SuSE 8.2 and KDE 3.2 too.
A similar behavior I have had with some icons on the controll bar (kicker).
The icon was a link to an application.
Finding the application on the taskbar I change the icon there.
I delete the previous icon form the controll bar and update it again with the altereted one (using the above link). Since then the icon was keept.

I hope you can find the way to solve your problem

Best regards,

I figured out what I was doing wrong. I was trying to pick an icon from a package that was not selected in the control center. For example, the crystal package was in use, and I was trying to use the mozilla icon from the kids package. I guess you cant combine packages.

It shouldn't a problem to pick an icon set using KDE manager and also manually set some of the icons yourself from the desktop. And *.png should be fine too...

Maybe you don't have the permissions to be changing the icon?

Try creating a Link to Location icon manually and setting it to point to the app you want the icon to open. Then you'll probably be able to set the icon.
