Can't setup any network

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and relatively new to Linux. I have bought a laptop recently and I would like to run Slackware on it. I have been using the installation guide "The Perfect Desktop: Slackware 12" from HowToForge, but I've only got to page three, mainly because I can not setup an internet connection on it.

Laptop is MSI VR700X-036EU, with the following specs:
Screen: 17.0" WXGA 1440 x 900
CPU: Intel Pentium Dual-Core T2080 (1.73GHz, FSB 533MHz, 1MB L2)
Graphics Card: Integrated Intel 950GMA
RAM: 2GB DDR2
Hard disk: 160GB SATA, 5400rpm
Optical drive: DVD-Super Multi
Communication: 56K modem, GLAN, IEEE 802.11b/g

I have a WebStar cable modem which can use LAN or USB to connect to a PC. I've tried it with Fedora Core 6, and Ubuntu 7.04 Live CD and the USB worked on both without any additional settings.
Now on Slackware, I have used Netconfig to set it to DHCP, but with no results.

If someone would be kind enough to guide me through the process of seting up the ethernet I would be very gratefull.

Hi baja_yu, Welcome to lq. Are the modules for the nic loaded? Check and/or post the output from the following please.
Code:
/sbin/lspci -v
/sbin/lsmod
/sbin/ifconfig -a
Good luck. ;-)

Thanks for the reply. Here are the outputs that the commands generated. They are quite large. I'm posting them here becuase I didn't find an 'attach file' feature on this forum.

Yes, but it gives me only a few steps to set up Hostname, domain name, static IP/DHCP, DHCP hostname. That's about it, and it doesn't help.

Have you tried running (as root) 'pppoe-setup'?

The pppop-setup got a little progress. Now in X when I go to Control Center > Network settings, the eth01 device which shows when I connect the cable modem via USB is activated. Earlier I couldn't activate it.
But still no internet connection.
When I connect the modem via LAN, eth0 still cant be 'enabled' in Control Center.

Output is the same if the cable modem is not connected. But if it is it also has this:

With my external ADSL modem, I connect via the NIC in my computer. The NIC card is configured with a static local address 10.1.1.2, subnet mask 255.255.255.192 and a default gateway of 10.1.1.1 (this is done in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf).
The modem has an IP address of 10.1.1.1, but gets an address via DHCP on connect. The modem takes care of mapping from the external DHCP assigned address to the local address.
The assignment of DNS server addresses is taken care of by the pppoe-start script.

I suspect that you need to do something similar.

Have you tried assigning ip, sub, gateway, etc. manually? If so, can you ping anything? I'm starting to suspect a driver issue?
Good luck. ;-)

Do you have to run this via USB cable? I never understood the concept of USB on cable modems because virtually every computer has a network port.

It seems now that the eth0 device listed in above logs is actually the WiFi card. So it would mean that the LAN ethernet is not enabled. How would I go about doing that, having in mind that it is an integrated card on a Laptop?
