Manual Network Setup Works, /etc/network/interfaces doesn't

I am trying to get my laptop to connect to my home wireless network. It used to work fine, but now the exact same settings don't work. However when I manually bring up the interface it does work.

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto wlan0
     pre-up iwconfig wlan0 essid *** key 123456789A
     gateway router
# ifup wlan0
# ping router
PING router ( 56(84) bytes of data.
From icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable
# iwconfig wlan0 essid *** key 123456789A
# ifconfig wlan0 netmask
# route add default gw router
# ifconfig wlan0 up
# ping router
PING router ( 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from router ( icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=3.12 ms
Any Ideas?

Network card:
Broadcom BCM4306 (via ndiswrapper)
Ubuntu Breezy
