When I run 'firefox' in my terminal, I get this error: "/usr/lib/firefox/firefox-bin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_object_compat_control"
This forums has always been very helpful. Maybe you guys could crack this one as well?
Check if there's not a 'wrapper' around it somewhere on your system. I can't check for Firefox, but for Mozilla, the program is /usr/lib/......../mozilla-bin (similar to your firefox). There is however a script in /usr/bin that will start mozilla.
Code:
wim@btd-techweb01:~/commandcentre/inc/rfs$ ls -l /usr/bin/mozilla
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root bin 4205 2004-12-22 03:19 /usr/bin/mozilla*
wim@btd-techweb01:~/commandcentre/inc/rfs$
This script sets up the complete environment before starting mozilla.

Oops, your problem is slightly different. Solution might not help.

Apparently I get the same error when I try to run xchat as well, so looks like it's a broader issue than just firefox. Looks like there is something wrong with the libpango library. The question is what?
Distribution: Slackware & Slamd64. What else is there?

What file did you use to install Firefox? I recently tried the newest libpango out of -current and got errors too. When I went back to the version that came with 10.2 the errors were gone.
In my case it was new stuff with new pango. Now that I'm back at my linux computer I can tell you version numbers. I was trying firefox-1.5.0.4 (I run 1.5.0.6 now) with pango 1.12.3 and was getting similar errors. I cahanged it back to 1.10.2 and firefox was happy again. I'll wait til the official release of 11 before upgrading pango. Maybe a downgrade will work for you.
