I don't think you can make it go away, but you can click the little icon (the one that sort of looks like double windows) in the top right of the panel to detach it. It becomes a floating toolbox, sort of like the classic GIMP toolbox. While it's floating, you can grab the edges of the toolbox and manipulate its dimensions. (I wouldn't have known that but for your question; it certainly makes Calligra Words much less annoying!)
By the way, this was Calligra Words Version 2.9.11
I was able to float the panel and then shrink it down and shove it by the bottom right of the screen partially outside the screen area (too far and it 'auto-snaps' to the bottom).
View | Distraction Free Mode is actually handy for bashing in a lot of text as well.
I'll have to use Open/LibreOffice for more demanding docs though.
I'm marking this as solved as googling suggests little control over UI for Calligra.
EDIT: seems calligra sheets doesn't like some of my LO spreadsheets, keeps crashing.
When I last tried using Calligra (around the date of this thread) I found that Calligra made permanent changes to the layout of documents, so I would suggest care when moving documents between Calligra Words and LO.
The hint seems to un-dock rather than hide unless I have misunderstood the hint you linked to.
