blackbox remote login

Couldn't wait for the mail so installed slackware 13.37 on two of my machines. Most everything works except when I login remotely for a blackbox session blackbox comes up and my custom menu appears but when I select an entry nothing happens the only one that works is exit. Blackbox works fine on both computers when run locally. Tried removing .blackbox.menu and .blackboxrc to see if they would be rewritten but they didn't reappear in the user directory - system the started using the default menu.

previous (working) blackbox version blackbox-0.70.1-i486-4 . the one with slackware 13.37 is blackbox-0.70.1-i486-3. may try switching to see what happens.

also the kdm background is persistent when blackbox starts (can't change the styles or reconfigure)

This is just speculation but I would check whether the user's numeric IDs are the same on both your local and your remote machine. It might be a problem if your local (logged in) user has an ID number of "1000" and on the remote machine the user with the same name has been assigned an ID of "1002" (or somesuch).

I've never tested this though, I try to keep the user IDs on my network identical. Tomorrow night I will experiment with this to see if it matters.

Thanks Saulgoode - yes I keep the the IDs the same when I do a clean install (Have /home on it's own partition, do a clean install on a new partition and symlink the home there so multitple versions can use the same home).

think the issue is with KDM will try xdm and would expect that to work. Think this because the background for the login manager is persistent (stays there when blackbox comes up). Slackware 13.37 can login to a 13.1 machine fine but when either a 13.1 or 13.37 logins to a 13.37 the kdm background persists, the menu can come up but doesn't do anything but exit.
