Question Bash behaving oddly.

I recently re-installed from 32-bit current to 64-bit current. That is, a complete new install, with /home/lopid being rsynced from a backup I made before the wipe, and replacing some /etc etc. files I had also backed up.

Now, bash behaves as if horizontal-scroll-mode is On, and ctrl-l no longer clears the terminal but prints another line, as if I had pressed Enter. I have of course set horizontal-scroll-mode explicitly to Off in ~/.inputrc, which I know is getting sourced because other settings in it are applied. I'm comparing the stty settings with another -current computer, which is still on 32-bit and does not exhibit this behaviour. This is the difference:

Code:
~0 diff 64-bit 32-bit
3c3
< swtch = <undef>; start = ^Q; stop = ^S; susp = ^Z; rprnt = ^R; werase = ^W;
---
> swtch = M-^?; start = ^Q; stop = ^S; susp = ^Z; rprnt = ^R; werase = ^W;
5c5
< -parenb -parodd -cmspar cs8 -hupcl -cstopb cread -clocal -crtscts
---
> -parenb -parodd -cmspar cs8 hupcl -cstopb cread -clocal -crtscts
7c7
< -iuclc ixany imaxbel -iutf8
---
> -iuclc ixany imaxbel iutf8
I have eliminated hupcl and iutf8 as the cause, and I'm not sure how to set swtch, to see if that's causing it:

Code:
~$ stty swtch 'M-^?'
stty: invalid integer argument: M-^?
I'm sure this must be something I have done or not done after I reinstalled to 64-bit, rather than a 64-bit specific issue. Can anyone help me determine what the cause is?

Thank you.

It does the same thing. I'll try it logging in at a clean console when I get home in a couple of hours.

What did you replace in /etc? Based on your post, it seems like maybe you overwrote some of the default profiles...

I discovered the problem. I had forgotten to add "xterm-256color" into /etc/termcap. Obviously, that was a file that I had not backed up.

Maybe it should be in /etc/termcap by default...
