Wow, I'm stumped. Could be an IRQ conflict. I'm out of ideas. I guess you can try and stick a different sound card, which is a bummer.

and in the case of an irq conflict it must be the os causeing it not the hardware like i said it worked in windows, there must be a way to configure it otherwise.

I don't know if it helps any to figure it out, but i just tried the play command from tty1, then startx from tty2. the computer hung when the screen went blank.

Need to start looking at logs I guess.

dmesg
/var/log/messages
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
/var/log/syslog

would be good places to start.

By any chance, is your laptop a Thinkpad? If it is, then this could be the problem:

Thinkpad Simple Boot

That is about the only thing that I could find. If that doesn't work, then I give up. lol

No, its dells version, the inspiron 3200.

xorgs logs are error free, message comes back with nothing, how am i supposed to check dmesg when the only option i have is hard reboot? and syslog has this error once:

Mar 3 20:35:27 darkstar kernel: cs4236: probe of cs4236.0 failed with error -16

and this one apears repeatedly:

Mar 3 20:45:34 darkstar kernel: isp1760: probe of 0000:00:07.3 failed with error -16

Here is an article about the Dell Inspiron 3200 that may help you:
http://members.tripod.com/jeffchiu/linux-i3200.html
and, specifically, for the sound:
http://members.tripod.com/jeffchiu/l...200.html#sound
Quote:
My Inspiron 3200 has a Crystal 4237B sound card, which works with the CS4232 loadable sound module. Use this instead of the Soundblaster/SBPro module.
Run:
Quote:
# lsmod | grep -i snd
to see what audio drivers you are running.
