Another question on upgrading

I've just downloaded the 3 CD's and am planning my upgrade. I presume, as the different software packages dont come on a single CD, I will need to mount the first one do an upgradepkg --install-new on the first cd, once that is done mount the second CD and do an upgradepkg --install-new on that CD all before doing a reboot?

You could just copy the contents of the CDs to their own folder and install all from there. Alternatively and if you have a fast connection, you can just mirror the 12.1 tree and then follow the UPGRADE.TXT instructions.

I don't have anything installed from the e, t or tcl series, so can I just miss these out of the upgrade?

It seems that by upgrading my system I will get a load of stuff I didn't install with the original slackware, like text editors and networking packages...is this normal? Should they then be removed afterwards? or do you advise leaving them on my system?

Also the upgrade.txt doesn't mention getting the new kernels, are these just manually copied from the kernels directory? If I copy the huge-smp kernel from the kernels directory do I need to install a modules package?

Absolutely you can. There's a small (SMALL) script in UPGRADE.TXT that excludes installing KDEi stuff -- you could do the same to exclude kdei/, e/, t/ and tcl/.

You shouldn't get too many new and unwanted packages if you only upgrade the series you already have installed. You may get a few extra packages that you will like, and maybe some that you don't. It's probably best to upgrade/install all of the series you originally installed and then manually remove what you find you don't like -- but it's your choice (you don't *have* to install everything new from a given series if you don't want, but if you exclude it you should make sure it isn't necessary).

The kernels are located in the a/ series and will be installed when you install the a/ series -- no manual copying is needed (the modules are also in the a/ series, whereas the kernel headers are in the d/ series).

Thanks for that T3slider.

I'll give this a go when I have 3/4 hours spare
