alsa no sound

I have recently upgraded to kernel 2.6.7 and also upgraded ALSA. When I run "alsaconf" it says "No supported PCI or PNP cards found". But there is no "sound card not found type error when I start kde.

The asound file in root's home looks like:

0 [IXP ]: ATIIXP - ATI IXP
ATI IXP rev 0 at 0xe8004400, irq 11
0: [0- 0]: ctl
16: [0- 0]: digital audio playback
24: [0- 0]: digital audio capture
33: : timer
00-00: ATI IXP AC97 : ATI IXP AC97 : playback 1 : capture 1
G0: system timer : 1000.000us (10000000 ticks)
P0-0-0: PCM playback 0-0-0 : SLAVE
P0-0-1: PCM capture 0-0-1 : SLAVE
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.6a.
Compiled on Sep 29 2004 for kernel 2.6.7.
0 snd_atiixp

I have also unmuted (m) things in alsamixer.

But there is no entry for sound card in lspci:

00:14.5 Multimedia audio controller: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 4341

There is also a directory in /proc called /proc/asound which has all the entried for the card, modules, devices, pcm etc.

Can anyone tell me what's wrong?

How did you upgrade alsa? I have always found that it is better to upgrade alsa by downloading and installing all the necessary packages from www.alsa-project.org
