This week it is all about KDE-6

This week in KDE: Plasma 6 Alpha approaches
Nate. November 3, 2023.
Time has a way of creeping up, and the Plasma 6 alpha release is in two days. People are scrambling to get their features in before either the soft feature freeze (on Monday) or the hard one (a few weeks later). So this has been a week of big changes! Starting on Monday, we’ll officially start the process of convergence and shift focus to bug fixing and UI polishing, with the currently in-flight new features trickling in too........

What are the hardware requirements for the desktop cube animation? I'm trying to get it working in VBox, without any success.

I doubt that there is anything special in terms of requirements: I have TgerLake laptop and it works great. But not sure about VBox. Unless you need OpenGL (ES?) version not supported by VBox.
In Plasma there is a shortcut preset but you need to install cube first: https://github.com/zzag/kwin-effects-cube

..

Personally I find KDE Plasma Overlook add-on more useful on a cluttered desktop. Also check out Activities (already installed) great idea but needs script separation so user can set for example tiling e.g. Polonium (for Wayland only) on one Activity working with many console windows open for example while second activity for office work without tiling activated.

Good luck

Yes: Meta-c works by default. You may have default shortcut assigned to something else (pre-selected for something you don't have): just delete default shortcut and re-establish it.

set it for "global" (or system wide, I don't know the name of the option in US)

all other places don't seem to be saved

You also need to have 4 virtual desktops

Nope
It will be included in kdeplasma-addons for plasma6
