Afterstep
I have just installed Aftershock and login in via text modem. Do I have to edit the .xinitrc with something to get it to load aftershock at login

Yes, your .xinitrc should at least have this line:
exec afterstep

Thanks that did work. Did not like After step but that is ok I will just continue the search for a good WM

Other recommendations for trial (in my opinion) are Fluxbox, IceWM, and XFce.
