Adding a Module - quick question

If I want to add a previously disabled module in the kernel, do I have to recompile the kernel from scratch, or can I just do "make modules, make modules_install"?

I want to be able to do:

-cd /usr/src/linux
-(enable module/save conf)
-make modules
-make modules_install

that will work ok. before you do that, rename /lib/modules/<yourkernel> to something else to have a backup.
