[SOLVED] Abandonware (Adobe Acrobat) startup error

I don't really believe that's a show stopper - I suspect compat32 libs. Earlier, I had the exact same error from a line in the 15,000s.
Every time I hit up arrow & return in an xterm, the line number of the error increases :-/. 28106, 28286, 28334, 28382, 28430, 28478, 28526, 28574, 28622, 28670, 28718, 28766. Mainly, that's a difference of 48 lines :-o. It got up to the 32000s, and then started at the beginni9ng again:-/.
But I have backed up the installed 14.2-compat32 packages and done a global 'upgradepkg --install-new' on the compat32 stuff. There has been messing recently, as I have been upgrading & downgrading to achieve compatibility. I have 64 bit happy, but the odd 32bit program is bellyaching because some compat32 packages were wiped by a 'slackpkg upgrade' (I think).

I know Adobe Acrobat Reader for Linux is abandonware and Adobe company policy seems to be to annoy and urinate on linux users, but I'm kind of used to it, and not enthusiastic about the alternatives.

I realize you specifically stated that you aren't particularly interested in AAReader alternatives, but have you tried qpdfview or Evince? qpdfview is definitely my favorite, it runs exceptionally smoothly/speedily on my older/slower hardware.

Sure glad I wandered in here. qpdfview is just what the doctor ordered. I installed the slackbuild and sure do like it

I like Zathura for reading (it's keyboard centric), Okular for more complicated documents (say with forms), and Qoppa PDF Studio for editing (but there's also Master PDF Editor).

Do you have your theme engine converted to a compat32 package? Unfortunatelly, Adobe reader is still required for filling documents with forms or something that connects online, etc... Therefore, I keep it around, though I use Evince. I have had problems with missing icons in Adobe Reader's dialogues in 64bit Slackware. Also, errors like

Ah, that explains it. Why suddenly go to low numbers?

I must say I'm impressed with the unwanted alternative offerings. Adobe acrobat reader is such a pita, it's worthwhile finding an alternative. I just wasn't ready for pain. I will try suggestions and post again later.

To answer some of the many suggestions:
* I don't like Okular. I tried it before. I tried to install it anyhow and it crapped out for the lack of libactivities.so.6. That won't last.
* Converting the theme engine to compat32 achieved nothing
* qpdfview won't compile for the lack of synctex, and I decided not to try installing that. So a recursive 'rm' command is coming there.
*- Evince I found in pkg and installed. When is he intending to write the rest of it? It might be worthy trying then. Right now, it looks like WIP.

My main user complains for the lack of the xfce theme with Acrobat. Other users complain for the lack of the 'adwaita' theme. But I can get help, or a version, even a -toPostScript output file, so I seem to be over the compat32 stuff. Acrobat seems to be stuck talking to X. Likewise ldd finds all the (many) required libraries.

xpdf seems to be the working substitute atm. I will try Master PDF and Qoppa PDF Studio. Zathura I will not try because I have a keyboard centric thing.

Failing that, I have 2 m$ windows and a Mint install in VMs and I can drop a reader in one of them.

Yep. That's more than possible, it's probable. I have been sucked into upgrading some apps for security fixes or necessary features and then had to downgrade for compatibility. I also have an unhealthy amount of stuff compiled here.

I looked at Qoppa, but they want money for it :-o. Master PDF studio seems the business. It slackbuilds, installs, runs and opens pdf files. I get messy pdfs to read. I don't know what else it does, but anything beyond that is a bonus.

So I can get rid of Abandonware, Mediocre-ware and Referenceware (Where the program doesn't actually DO ANYTHING, but calls a humungoius number of libs to do it).

Summarizing, the solution is to install masterpdf and uninstall acrobat.

I do use the paid version because I have to deal with digital signatures and such, but I should have mentioned that they also have a free viewer (PDF Studio Viewer). Just another option for dealing with those complicated PDFs

Yes, it's part of kde, but I went the low cholesterol route with XFCE. I'd have to find libactivities in the kde packages and install that. As I mentioned, I was underwhelmed with it when I did bother.
