4.9.x LTS very smooth on 14.2 and Feb 18 -current

Finally moved 4.9.74 -> 4.9.158 on a 14.2 base, very smooth wo mitigations:
Code:
intel_pstate=disable spectre_v2=off pti=off spec_store_bypass_disable=on noibrs noibpb l1ft=off
lilo+BIOS, i7-6700HQ

I only run long-window LTS kernels so may try -current with 4.9.

Yes, the older APCI driver is still more efficient than intel for a high-performance laptop scenario.

Cheers,

As smooth in current (circa 18 Feb 23:59 UTC) as 14.2.

Code:

Slackware 14.2+
$ cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=4.9.158cur ro root=97e vt.default_utf8=0 modprobe.blacklist=nouveau libata.force=noncq quiet intel_pstate=disable spectre_v2=off pti=off spec_store_bypass_disable=on noibrs noibpb l1ft=off
$ uname -a
Linux darkstar.example.net 4.9.158 #2 SMP Tue Feb 19 07:36:52 PST 2019 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

kernel.org

Assume: working -current
* untar in /usr/src, cd in to new source directory
* make mrproper
* copy .config from -current
* make oldconfig
* fixup /usr/src/linux link to point to 4.9.x tree
* make -j8 bzImage; make -j8 modules; make modules_install

Cheers,

Cheers,
tx, instead of "make oldconfig", I always do "make olddefconfig", to go with the defaults automatically, and then do a make menuconfig, to browse around to check what I might wanna change.

just a quick remark on your append stuff to boot the kernel. I see you are using the pti=off parameter, which is for Meltdown. That security only costs around max 2% of performance, as far as I have heard, so personally I would leave it on. But maybe you have different reasons?

After booting the 4.9.158 kernel my system had some probs with implementing the rules with ufw (uncomplicated firewall) though, so I can't really use it, unless I get rid of ufw, in favor of iptables. But for the rest it ran fine indeed, in Slackware -current.
