This
Kernel Rebuild Guide is very good, and if you read it you should
be able to compile a new kernel okay. It's also very thorough.
You should also read the
Newbie Guide To Compiling A Kernel!
here at LQ written by DrOzz. Either one will work, but if you've
never recompiled a kernel that first one will give you some help
in determing your hardware specs.
To build a kernel you must know a lot about your hardware. With
the newer kernels, you might get newer drivers for hardware, and
more drivers. There are also many other changes. Just remember
that the kernel is managing your hardware, and where you setup
how your computer is supported.
You might also benefit by upgrading to Slackware-10.1. If you're
interested, you'll be better off backing up your system and then
doing a fresh install. Slack-10.1 comes with the 2.4.29 kernel by
default, and a 2.6.10 kernel is included if you want to upgrade
using that one after the install. Read carefully and thoroughly
before taking any of these actions.
