2.6 kernel

Well, I'm starting to get to know how to do alot of things with my slack, and I was wondering a bit about kernels.

I'm running on the kernel 2.4.22, and I hear alot about people compiling the new kernels and such.

I was wondering what compiling a new kernel would do/make available for me.

Also, what all would I need to know to be able to do something like this?

This Kernel Rebuild Guide is very good, and if you read it you should
be able to compile a new kernel okay. It's also very thorough.

You should also read the Newbie Guide To Compiling A Kernel!
here at LQ written by DrOzz. Either one will work, but if you've
never recompiled a kernel that first one will give you some help
in determing your hardware specs.

To build a kernel you must know a lot about your hardware. With
the newer kernels, you might get newer drivers for hardware, and
more drivers. There are also many other changes. Just remember
that the kernel is managing your hardware, and where you setup
how your computer is supported.

You might also benefit by upgrading to Slackware-10.1. If you're
interested, you'll be better off backing up your system and then
doing a fresh install. Slack-10.1 comes with the 2.4.29 kernel by
default, and a 2.6.10 kernel is included if you want to upgrade
using that one after the install. Read carefully and thoroughly
before taking any of these actions.

Be Very careful at how you go through this,. So far as new/experienced user I have managed to crash Slackware 10.1 3 times now with Linux 2.6.11.5 and 2.6.11.6 and more. I run 2.4.29 Linux currently and have been fighting with getting this thing up and running for the past two hours, stupid thing would not let me add to my menu as root. I had to tweak it royally to get it let me even add the ff and tb again.

Well I have to say that this is the 4th time tonight had to reinstall slack fresh, and for some reason when I F-Disk it using the CD installer the files are not lost. Had to use my Win 98 Boot Disk to totally kill off the drive and start fresh. Finally after 2 hours of FTP from KDE and Mozilla sites got the Firefox and Thunderbird back and also KDE 3.4.0 installed as I don't car for GNome all that much. Good thing I have 98% of my PW's written somewhere.

My LG CD/R RW can work, and I think so can yours, you just need to run the cdtools or cdrecorder from the command line. Lots of things there and one thing from the command line, type man cdrecorder and maybe youwill get some documentation on How To. I am going to have to also.
