Installing mandrake 9.2: wont detect suitable diskdriver (WD Raptor 36,7 & KV8-MAX3)

MY PROBLEM: After booting from CD i choose language. Then it is time to
detect my hard drive. v.9.2 does not detect any suitable driver, but
10.0 detects some sort of SATA_VIA-controller but when I choose to
proceed, it doesn't work anyway. I want to install 9.2, having heard
10.0 makes win98 work stable. So here is my question: How can I install
linux mandrake 9.2 and where can I find the appropriate drivers?

MY COMPUTER:
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (1mb cache)
Motherboard: Abit KV8-MAX3
Harddrive: Western digital 36,7GB (8MB cache)

I assume this is all you need to know to solve this problem. Please
send me a mail or ask here at the forum if you need more information
about my system and my components.

My computer is rather new, so I guess this is why I haven't found any
drivers. When I installed XP PRO I had to add drivers from a floppy
during install (by pressing F6), is there an equivalent of doing this
in mandrake 9.2? You see, I'm completely new to this operative system
but I would really appreciate your help so I can start learning it.

haavardskule; because W98 has been preprogrammed to do a lot of configuration and self installing drivers, it is not quite the same with linux.
linux will self install drivers and configure but as you stated will also configure what ever programmers attempt to cover inadvent of whom may have all those devices popular within linux. scsi and sata drives. but due to manufactures abound some drivers are not compatible with linux. those have to be installed manually.

I know that Windows programmed to make life easier, but could you please answer some of my questions? I really want to install linux because I'm planning to learn using it. Maybe you could tell me the best way to get a driver for my hard drive? What if none on the given list works? How do I add to it? How do I write my own driver?

Thank you, but I'm afraid that the information is beyond my level (at the moment). I really think I'll have to start with the basics of linux before i start programming. Anyway, I'll give it a go

That drive and that mother board both support sata and it should install out of the box.

I checked that site, but there were no specific answer on my problem. But at least it sent me on right track Some days ago I sent a mail to the producer of my motherboard, asking for technical support (technical@abit.com.tw)

So, now I've got the driver, but how do I install it? I did not find any manuals, but I've posted a question at viaarena forum. But could anyone help me out? I hope this topic can be a complete guide in the end, for others sharing my problem...

What you should have is not a driver but a kernel patch. That is the file called VIA IDE ATA133 Patch 8237 ver0.8.gz from the link you gave.

You are going to have to re compile the kernel using this patch.
This is as dangerous as it sounds.
However, compiling a new kernel is what using linux is all about.
First apply the patch using the patch command, this link is old but still relevant.

Thanks for helping me one step further. Now I've got another problem. The point is that I don't have the possibility to install mandrake at all, so how can I edit/recompile the kernel?

Having read about compiling a new kernel (http://linuxheadquarters.com/howto/t...pilation.shtml), I noticed these unfamiliar commands, such as:
"make dep" and "make clean". These are obviously commands within linux, but how can I patch the kernel when I've only got window$ xp installed?

Just re read your post. 9.2 uses the 2.4 kernel, this does not support SATA. However mandy have issued a version of 9.2 with SATA drivers. Here

But I would recommend going with 10. I am not aware of any problems with 98. XP needs a tweek apparently, but that works as well.

Hi!

I've just installed Mandrake 9.2 on my old computer. I thought that I could install it there and recompile the kernel there and somehow move the installation to my new computer using sata drives...

But I've got a better idea. I've got the driver I need. But I want to load it in the installation process.. This should be possible, but it has to be binary module or something. Am I right? How do I do this. I thought this was much easier. (like pressing F6 in XP to load additional drivers - rocks)
