For some reason, this thread makes me think of this Monty Python skit.
Excellent, hadn't seen that. A Monty Python sketch that ended without anyone getting shot!
And yes, this thread is very much like it. My brother had to run Slackware 1.0 on a Psion 3 organiser which ran off a dynamo on the family exercise bike.
When I say "built by myself" is about starting with drawing the motherboard circuits by hand, buying the components from an electronics shop, then soldering them one by one.
My thanks to our BDFL for introducing icecream into -current
I had looked into icecream some time back when SuSE introduced it, but never really implemented it in any meaningful way. Now, with some machines which are otherwise not being used (I was originally planning on using said machines for retro gaming, but that didn't work out for various reasons), I'm really pleased how easy it is to set up icecream for compilations. My machine (FX-8370 w/ 32GB of RAM) is no slouch when it comes to compilation, but I've always been curious about distributed computing, and now I have the chance to do so. I'm excited for the possibilities!

Thanks for sharing this, had never seen it before! Bit late to the party but I was pretty ill when you posted it. Paints the atmosphere of this thread in a good way.
