Question xscreensaver lockout after upgrade to kernel 2.6.0 and nvidia 5328

xscreensaver login dialog doesnt accept my password
but if i hit ctrl-alt-backspace i can login fine through gdm.

error message in the logs is:
xscreensaver(pam_unix)[4991]: authentication failure; logname= uid=500 euid=500 tty=:0.0 ruser= rhost= user=keb

i have a redhat 7.3 distribution,
recently compiled and installed kernel 2.6.0 and it worked ok,
then i added nvidia driver version 1.0-5328.

other possibly relevant numbers:
pam-0.75-46.7.3
gdm-2.2.3.1-22
glibc-2.2.5-44
XFree86-4.2.1-13.73.23
xscreensaver-3.33-4

my question is, where to look next for the source of this problem?
