X programs refusing to start

I just installed a fresh Red Hat 9.0. It's working fine, except, after starting two or three programs in X, no more will seem to start. It says "starting programname" and then exits without doing anything at all. Any idea what might be wrong? I'm using Gnome.

Is it program-specific, or just anytime you're already running couple?

Did you initialize a swap partition? It sounds like you may be running out of memory, and don't have swap - though I think that would probably generate an error of some sort. In Windoze, it'd mean blue screen of death.

It happens even if I'm ot running anything specific. It seems to be specific to Gnome. KDE works fine, but I kind of like Gnome better :/ And I don't think I'm running out of memory. Right now it's doing the same thing again, and I seem to have 412MB of 512 free memory, 1020 of 1020 swap.
