X Refusing to start

I've searched and tried but i must be doing something wrong because nothing is working.

New install of Slackware 9.1 on Athlon XP 2000+, Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti 4800 SE, Vmware with XP Professional Host.

Ran xf86config, tried nvidia generic, nvidia geforce, generic vesa, and vmware generic guest driver in video card selection, none work.

#349 Geforce Driver EE: No Devices Detected
Vmware EE: Screen(s) Found Unusable Configuration
#18 Nvidia Generic EE: No Devices Detected
#0 Generic VESA EE: Screen(s) Found Unusable Configuration

Tried running Slackware without Vmware but had the same problem!.

I then tried running XFree86 -configure and just goes black.

Any ideas

try using the command xf86config

my guess is possibly bad monitor horizontal and vertical sync settings, so look those up
