VNC firewall ports

I just can't get this to work:

Using Red Hat ES 4's VNC server at home, and trying to connect to it from work using RealVNC's client.

What port do I need to open in the firewall sitting in front of the Red Hat machine to allow VNC access to it?

I can see with a netstat -an that the Red Hat machine is listening on ports 5801 and 5901. I understand that 5901 would be the port to connect to for the :1 vnc session on the linux machine. Even so, the RealVNC client fails to connect.

Any help will be much appreciated. I've googled the issue, but with little success on a definitive answer.

Thanks.

5800 and 5900 are the normal ports for VNC AFAIK , especially 5900

do you use a router to manage your internet connections?
If yes, you'll have to create a virtual server there so
the router knows which computer to forward the connections
on port xxxx to

Thanks for your replies.

Yes I have a modem/router set up at home with a port forward set up for port 5901 to my Red Hat server.

5800 for when using a Java client via a browser, right?

5900 for using the normal client, right?

And then, e.g. 5901 for session :1 and 5902 for session :2, etc... right?

I've found a reference on the Internet saying that if you connect from Windows, using the RealVNC client, then you should use:

dns_name_of_server:5901:1

or

ip_address_of_server:5901:1

to connect to the VNC server on port 5901 (if it's listening on that port) and to session :1. Is that correct?

Thanks again.

Got it working.

Outbound VNC connections had been disabled on the firewall at work for some reason. Allowed outbound connections to port 5901 and all is fine.

For the record: I can actually connect with server:5901:1 and server:1 - both work but I haven't tried it for, for example, server:5901:2 to connect to another vnc session.

Thanks anyways for the help!
