/dev/urandom

Posted 08-29-2006 at 12:00 PM by baikonur

this is a nice-to-know.

quote from the urandom man page:
The character special files /dev/random and /dev/urandom (present since
Linux 1.3.30) provide an interface to the kernel's random number gener-
ator. File /dev/random has major device number 1 and minor device num-
ber 8. File /dev/urandom has major device number 1 and minor device
number 9.

The random number generator gathers...

new Kernel up+running

Posted 08-02-2006 at 08:55 AM by baikonur

Compiled my new Kernel yesterday. Now, acpi works great. I have a little battery-icon on one of my gnome panels that right now shows me that I still have 57 minutes to go... enough time to finish this blog entry.
I used 'time' with the make-kpkg command. This is what I got:
real 11m46.257s
user 9m14.727s
sys 0m37.918s
Wow, not bad. When I compiled the first version of the 2.6.17 Kernel, then running a 2.6.8-debian-standard-kernel-image, it took the...

Portmap is just so obnoxious

Posted 08-01-2006 at 08:51 AM by baikonur

fixed some things on my Laptop yesterday - it's got SOUND now.
also played around in my next Kernel's configuration. Like:
CONFIG_HZ_1000 and ACPI_ASUS enabled and low latency and
more fancy stuff.
I shut down the system, but later on I rebooted to do some more
stuff. But... the stupid portmapper was hanging everytime, trying
to connect to the nfs-shares on our corporate server. *grrr*
Had to boot from a rescue-CD and edit /etc/fstab to get it going...

setting up nfs

Posted 07-31-2006 at 11:59 AM by baikonur

this is what I got in the beginning:

% mount 192.168.1.200:/home/nfstest /mnt/nfstest
NFS Portmap: RPC: Program not registered

@ http://nfs.sourceforge.net/nfs-howto/ar01s03.html I learned that rpc.mountd handles the initial mount requests.
Then, after I started /usr/sbin/rpc.mountd (and /usr/sbin/rpc.nfsd) on the server, it told me I didn't have permission.

But this was a test folder, chmod 777 just to make sure for now!?

opening (KP4)

Posted 07-31-2006 at 11:25 AM by baikonur

my own blog, eh?

[this ist my blog,
there are many like it,
but this one is mine...]

so this would be a good place to keep some
of the things that usually slip out of my
mind before I need them for the 2nd time.
like: xfs won't work with grub prior to grub-0.95.

or things I want myself to remember that I want
to learn about them.
like: I want to find out what portmap really does.
