You want 'rpm -Fvh' which will only upgrade packages that are already installed. You probably don't want to do this for the kernel though. There might be an "except" switch, look at 'man rpm', but if not and if you have the space, you could create a directory on your hard disk and copy over all the rpm's except the kernel-related ones and maybe anything else critical.
That way you can have a new and old version of these packages until you're sure the new version don't cause you any problems.
There might be some new packages you will need, not sure how the '-F' (freshen) switch handles these. You can use '--test' for a dry run.
