upgrading kernel in Enterprise se Beta1

I'm pretty new to linux, so sorry about my ignorance,

I'm running Enterprise Linux SE beta1 with kernel 2.6.8, but id like to upgrade to the latest kernel 2.6.9.

I'd like to ask two questions to the folk:

1. can I use the kernel downloaded from kernel.org? and follow the compiling procedure?

2. I have to use this box for routing pourpose, what is the best release of 2.6.9? Could I patch it with -ac16??

thanks
