SUSE 10.0 beta1

Hi,

I just wonder if it is possible(and wise) to upgrade SUSE 9.3pro (which is working perfectly) to opensuse 10.0 beta1. Right now I am downloading this beta version of 4 CDs and would like to know if there is any danger if I upgrade the existing OS.

That would not be wise. You should go and see the bugs beta1 still has. If you want to test it thats different. But I wouldn't recommend upgrading yet. Wait for the final release. Meanwhile if you have a spare computer lying around install 10.0 on that.

I don't understand what opensuse is. I know it's a community project...but once the final is done, isn't it going to be SuSE 10.0? It isn't a whole seperate linux OS, is it?

Simple! SuSE crew and their project was bought by Novell Inc. And now SuSE in a part of Novell Linux Desktop. Putting bluntly they went commercial. But againt SCO, that didn't offer anything when they went commercial Novell offers you OpenSuSE. Pretty much like Redhat offers you FedoraCore Project

riba43,
I was wondering the same thing myself... here is an exerpt from the opensuse.org download section:

Quote:
Currently, SUSE Linux 10.0 OSS Beta 1 (code name: Prague) is an unsupported, open source only, preliminary edition of SUSE Linux that contains bleeding-edge packages and represents the latest development snapshot. If you intend to test for bugs or contribute patches, this version is for you.
So basically, if you're wanting to try out openSuSE as your main desktop OS, I'd wait until 10.0 RC1 or 10.1 comes out. If you plan on fiddling around a lot, and expecting bugs and the like... check out the beta.

Check out the openSuSE Roadmap: http://www.opensuse.org/index.php/Roadmap

It seems there is some confusion as to what the OpenSuSE project is, so I thought I'd post a couple of articles about Novels' move:

IT Jungle

eWeek

For those of you that don't have the time to read through these I summerize:

Novell, due to customer request, and other business reasons, have decided that they need/want to have more community interaction and participation in the development of SuSE Linux. Part of this is that Novell has noticed that individual users tend to be cheap and therefore they run free (as in cost) distributions (Fedora, Debian, Slackware, etc.) Novell has also noticed that when companies look at going to Linux they often go with a distro that 1. has corporate level support and 2. a distro that their IT staff know how to work with. so doing quick math you and Novell can see that having a community/Free as in cost product is a good move.

So Novell will make what has been SuSE Professional into OpenSuSE but unlike Fedora which can only be had through download when OpenSuSE gets out of beta Novell will package it up and sell it boxed up with manuals and something like a 90 day install support as well as have it available through the website for download. Once that happens (sometime late September for 10.0) then beta 1 of the next release (10.1 in this case) will go up on the OpenSuSE site for download and development.
