RHEL 4 WS and DRI Radeon VE/7000

I am running RHEL 4 WS current and trying to get DRI to work again. I had it working in RHEL 3 WS but it was quite a while ago and I only remember that I had to jump through a lot of hoops to get it to work. I have tried everything in the DRI WIKI troubleshooting info and nothing seems to work. My system info: Dell Optiplex GX240 2GHz P4 2Gb RAM ATI Radeon VE/7000 Xorg 6.8.2
rest of s/w is stock RHEL 4 WS and up2date as of today. This is really frustrating!!

Another data point - I tried booting both the stock RHEL 4 Linux Kernel (2.6.9-11EL) and my custom configured one (2.6.12-RT-V0.7.51-33) with no difference. One additional data point is that when I run LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo the following lines show up near the top of the output:

Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
libGL error: XF86DRIQueryDirectRenderingCapable failed

I've not found any mention of either of the lines in the DRI WIKI troubleshooting docs. Anyone? Anyone? Buhler?
