Cool don't know about centos, but on whitebox at least they are some acknowledged issues

i'm using rhel3 for personal use. perhaps they won't sue for personal usage? been great thus far on this r51.

i can't remember a serious hiccup with rhel3. required software, e.g. adsl, vmware, are smooth.

not much description on centos. they just say "full compliance".
http://www.centos.org/projects/centos

wb seems more stable and more open about their bugs. just requires specific tweaking because rhel packages by default refers to rh in many places...

All this talk about RHEL has me very intrigued.

I'm at the download ftp mentioned above by GaryM and in the ia64 (that's for AMD Athlon processors, right?) directory, i find disc 2 to 5 and 3 different disc 1s. What are each of these?

I'm only looking to use it for a personal desktop; looking for a slight change of pace from FC2. Thanks in advance.

BTW: Welcome to LQ , guangong!

CentOS is the same as RHEL and is updated using RHEL update sources. the only difference is that it doesn't have the Redhat branding. If you want up to date software, this may not be for you because it has older packages than Fedora Core 2, but they are heavily tested to make sure that they are stable to run in an Enterprise environment.

I downloaded the WS disc one iso file and burnt it to a cd RW, but I can't boot from it. Does anyone know how I can do this?

Thanks, dubya.

Which are you running? centos/wb/?

i can assure you rhel4 beta1 disk1 iso is bootable.

rhel4 b1 is as bleeding edge as you can get, with kernel 2.6.

I can't boot from the RHEL beta ia64 disc, but I can from the i386. Does that tell me anything about my architecture? Thanks.

from your earlier posts, you're running athlon. there're 2 types of athlon processors - 32 and 64-bit.

which are you?

from the fact that i386 iso is bootable and the ia64-iso wasn't, it is clear that yours is athlon 32.

how do you like rhel4 b1? i've only booted from it.

I'm posting this from Windows since I'm not sure how to find out that information on Linux.

In system information, under processor, I see:

x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 1 AuthenticAMD ~2079 Mhz

I'm a little confused by this. And under system type, it says:

X86-based PC

you can install the rhel discs on an many computers as you want, but you only get updates for the first one you register with up2date... Whitebox looks pretty good.. though I've never used it.. I would say if you wanna learn red hat enterprise.. use the RHEL 4 beta release... if your not using it for production.. you should be more than fine...

ia64 = IA-64 (i.e. Intel's 64-bit architecture, Itanium processors)

x86_64 = AMD Athlon 64
