Redhat 9 Strange X problem

Hi,

I am running Redhat 9 on my Dell laptop. Lately I cannot start X from run level 3 using the startx script. No error is displayed however X server shuts down. If I su to root or relogin to root within the same run level (3) and run startx X will start nicely.

When I try run level 5 as default through /etc/inittab I can see X working and I can log in with user account and with root account.

It is very strange why X server shuts down when I run startx with user account in run level 3.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thank you.

What does the Xfree log say? Look in there for clues.
