Some obsolete routines in RH 8-9 can do so in a 2.6 kernel... You'll need to upgrade way too much of the system to get it to work seamlessly... Try doing so in FC1, distro in which compiling a 2.6 is a breeze, and is just another Red Hat!

I've just downloaded Fedora Core 1, planning to try it when I have to the, but now I'm kind of getting the hang of being with RHL
By the way, I have weird experiences with samba, last time I upgraded samba then link up my XP machines, each user has his/her my home directories loaded automatically.....
But now I link the XP boxes first then upgrade, I can't see my home drives! I've set the logon drive = H: in /etc/samba/smb.conf file, so there ain't H: for me to map in XP.
Mind giving me a few hints what I've missed out?
Where so you reckon can I get more info about window's "net send" service?

basically, you have an older SAMBA installed. The new SAMBA (3.xx) found on RH updates and with FC1 will serve the home directory to users if the user has an account on the linux machine (whcih is recommended). To me that's the reason.

hmm.... must it be from the RedHat update site?
I got the latest one from www.samba.org, version 3.0.4.....
Ohh, wait... do I have to download the samba-client, samba-swat and stuff? I think I did that last time and it worked..... you reckon thats the problem?
Then can I use Samba updates from RHL9 in RHL8? Hm... can't seem to find those updates on redhat.com

forgot another thing.... the /dev/null going bonkers after I delete a machine account is also a bug?
Is there a fix for that?
If yes then I might want to use RHL9 again!
Samba: You'd only need the Samba Client (for Linux clients) installed. There are no Samba 3.0.x packages from Red Hat updates, you may get it to work if you download the Fedora updated rpm (from the updates site).
About the /dev/null going crazy... what exactly happened? How did you erase the user's account? I have never had any problems with /dev/null and deleting users from my system.

OK, i'll try that fedora samba update
I delete machine accounts (e.g. user$) using "SYstem Settings -> Users and Groups".
When I delete a user, the group that I created to store the machines get deleted as well!
A message popped out asking something like "do you want to delete user's home directory?". It didn't matter whether I click yes or no, the machine group still gets deleted.....
Then when I rebooted, I get a "dup2 bad file descriptor error" for almost every process.... then threw me into maintenance mode!
I had a hard time looking for the solution, had to use "mount -o remount...", "mknod..." and stuff....
is it a bug? did you have similar experience? or did bust up something again
oh yeah.... i never updated anything, i just use it as it is...
Let me get this straight... When you created the users accounts you put them all in the same group as the primary group? (machine if I understand you correctly). If that was the case, then that's why the group is getting deleted. Because the program will delete the user plus it's primary group (more than a bug is a nuisance of the redhat-config-users program). What I do is to let every user have it's own group, then I create the common group externally and just add users to that group. When I delete a user, the group does not get deleted. Another way is to create users without group, so when you add them to a group the group (theoretically) would not get deleted. Also I usually unsubscribe users from groups before deleting them, maybe that's why I haven't had any problems. You may want to take a look at the problem at redhat.bugzilla.org
Well I was kinda hoping the FC1 package would install in RH 9 without any problems (since you can nstall RH 9 packages in FC1 without problems). Anyway, I find it odd there are no updates for redhat-config-users... anyway, to unsubscribe a user from a group, open the redhat-config-users program, and go to the groups tab; Now select a group and click the properties button, a new window opens with some info about the gourp. If you click the group users tab, you'll see a list of user names preceded by a check box, simply remove the check box from the user you are about to remove
