Problem compiling 2.4.22 kernel

I found linux kernel 2.4.22 on a dvd that came with a linux magazine, i decided to put it on my machine which is at the moment runnign 2.4.0

I was able to move it to my home directory adn unpack it.
I did a

Make oldconifg, which seemed to go fine.

At the end it told me to do a Make dep

But when idid this it gave me this error:

[root@localhost linux-2.4.22]# make dep
gcc -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -o scripts/mkdep scripts/mkdep.c
make:
gcc: Command not found
make: *** [scripts/mkdep]
Error 127
[root@localhost linux-2.4.22]#

And now i cannot move on to compiling it. Any help would be much apreciated

this generally means that Gcc is not installed!

I have downloaded gcc-3.3.3.tar.bz2.

Is there a specific location where i need to unpack it, once this is done what do i do next.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Sorry for asking such basic questions.
