I'm running +20 pc's all on RH 6.1. No GUI, no mouse - it's not needed, it's not wanted. For certain reasons pertaining to hardware, database, functionality, etc, I need to upgrade to RH 7.2. I cannot go higher than this as 7.3 upwards is incompatible with the database being used. Basically it's 7.2 or BUST.
The problem:
Once I have installed 7.2, I disable the gpm service and make sure mouseconfig is set to "No Mouse" and pull out the PS2 mouse. When I reboot, the pc gets as far as -
.... and then the pc hangs. If I reconnect the mouse and reboot, it will start up. I have tried installing without a mouse, but with the same result. Out of interest I installed RH 9.0 to see if it would do the same, but it boots happily without a mouse connected. It would seem this problem is 7.2 specific.
I seriously need to get the pc's to boot up on 7.2 WITHOUT a mouse connected.
Ok, I figured out the problem, for any that are interested. It was a USB conflict. If I disable the USB controllers in the BIOS, the pc will boot properly without the mouse attached. This is still a problem since I will have to carry a mouse around everytime I want to use the USB ports.
Any way I can configure the IRQ settings or something on the USB?
Well, I've helped myself out again. Hope this will help someone out there with the same problem.
Final solution to get RH 7.2 working WITH USB and WITHOUT mouse:
Enable USB in BIOS, enable USB mouse support in BIOS, disable gpm in Linux, yank out mouse, and VOILA! - Linux boots without mouse attached and with USB working!
