that is a typical message and that is fine. It will still install. Check your /boot/grub/menu.lst and it should be there. You can also check /usr/src and your new kernel should be there. You can install multiple kernels and test them out.

First you can not use the .rpm extension when checking to see if it is installed. Once it is installed it is no longer and rpm file.
rpm -qi kernel-2.6.18-8.1.15.el5
Now if you want the kernel source then you need to install the rpm like kernel-devel-2.6.18-8.1.15.el5.rpm
This places the kernel source in /usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-8.1.15.el5
When installing src.rpm this is common output. Don't worry it changes ownership to root or as to a user if you have the needed rpms to build from your home directory.
