Question Cannot use yum ( couldn't connect to host )

Hello everyone,

I am a student working on developing an REST API for an existing database.
Now i am given access o a redhat server to install LAMP, and deploy the API, but i am having problems doing that.

Here's what i get when i run the "sudo yum update" command :

There was an error communicating with RHN.
Red Hat Satellite or RHN Classic support will be disabled.
Error communicating with server. The message was:
Unable to connect to the host and port specified

Does anyone know what should i do here ?

Thanks

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.

Is the server registered with Red Hat?

Does the server connect to the internet using a proxy server?

Thanks micheal,

The server is given to me by one of my supervisors, so i looked on the internet for a way to know if the server is registred with redhat and i found this command :

sudo subscription-manager status

and this was the reponse of the server :

+-------------------------------------------+
System Status Details
+-------------------------------------------+
Overall Status: Unknown

And i think that the server is not using any proxy since i can ping to www.google.com

Ask your supervisors if you have a Red Hat subscription. If so then I would contact them for help with determining why you are having problems. If not then you should using CentOS which is basically a free version of RHEL.

Definitely follow michaelk's advice.
Also, you could just check the yum conf files content in /etc/yum.repos.d/ to see what it's actually pointing at.
