Question AS3-mod_auth_ldap w/apache2

New AS3 install. Trying to get mod_auth_ldap installed. Redhat includes mod_authz_ldap, which isn't what I need. mod_auth_ldap is what I need. Is there an easy way to install that module (that's part of apache, but not AS3), short of re-installing apache? I tried removing Apache, but there are a ton of packages that need it. I had a 7.3 install that worked great with mod_auth_ldap. I found a mod_auth_ldap package, but it requires apxs and the LDAP sdk. apxs of course is not installed with redhat.

update:
I like pounding my head against the wall, it feels sooo good when I quit.
I took another look at using the mod_authz_ldap. I got it working now. The trouble that I'm having, it passess the entire DN to the script, I want it to pass just the username. I can hack the script to just use the username, but I have 'require group staff' in the .htaccess, I don't want to have to enter:
staff: uid=blah,ou=People,o=my.ldap.org
for every user I want to allow access. I should be able to just have in the group file:
staff: blah

AuthzLDAPSetAuthorization off is supposed to not pass the DN, but it does.

Thanks
Roger
