Add/Remove Package problem RH9.0

A newbie needs guidance please. - I am trying to add the kernel development package in RH9 by ticking the appropriate box in Add/Remove Packages in Package Managment. However when clicking Update I am informed that the follwoing packages were not found and installation cannot continue until they are installed:-

krb5-libs-1.2.7-10 and openssl-0.9.7a-2

Now when I try to install these packages I find that later versions must have been previously installed (maybe by the RedHat update process)

krb5-libs-1.2.7-14 and openssl-0.9.7a-20.2

I cannot erase (rpm -e) the newer versions because there are dependancies so I am not not sure how to proceed. I would appreciate advice.

Download apt-get and synaptic

http://freshrpms.net

This will help you a lot. The genreic tool for installing RPM Packages in Red Hat sucks!

Hope that helps...

Not much progress here. I have loaded apt-get and synaptic but when opening synaptic, the windows remains "grayed out" and the curser changes to a eggtimer when moved over the synaptic window. I guess this means that I have not installed something properly. This does seem to be a struggle for me. Any further help would be appreciated.

Odd - Having rebooted a couple of times it seems that I can access the synaptic window

Problem solved but only by installing Linux via the update route. I assume that there must be more elegant ways but I did not know what they were.

BTW I Have got Synatptic to work.
