How to manually install puppy 4.12?

OK, for some reason, Puppy-4.12 sees my hd as sda, while most all other distro's see it as hda.
Now, when trying to do a Full install of puppy grub gets messed up
and doesn't install right.
I fixed this using another livecd.
however, I don't know how to Manually install puppy
meaning I want to de-compress whatever into the partition
create a boot/grub folder, install grub, make a menu.lst, etc
If I let puppy install grub again it will mess up my mbr
saying afterwards "no bios found /dev/hda"

Also, can someone post menu.lst entry for
puppy full install?
am I supposed to de-compress initrd.gz or .sfs or both?
Thanks

Here is a page full of topics on installing puppy to hd doing a frugal install or full. I followed one when I did mine but it has been so long ago I can not remember which one I followed. I did a full install.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...&aq=f&oq=&aqi=

If you have any questions I will be happy to try and answer them.

As far as puppy seeing the hd as sda instead of hda is that the newer release of grub recognises all hds as sdx

My MBR is regularly confused when I install a new Puppy version or another distro.

Instead of sorting it out manually, I use the SuperGrub Disc 0.9797

Using the "MBR + Linux >2)" menu option I simply choose the distribution with the desired menu.lst and SuperGrub resets the MBR for me.

I should do the necessary homework on GRUB so I can know exactly how it is done, but the above is quicker.

Not sure if this meets your current need but hope it helps.

Thanks to both of you

My problems still persist...!#
If I use the puppy installer everything seems to go well
I used both expert grub setup and auto-grub setup when installing
the multiple attempts....
anyway, no errors are reported during install and grub installs...
this is a Full Install; so I reboot and push enter to boot
the kernel booting message blinks by really fast and then just
a black screen, like it's frozen?
it just sits there, after 10mins I powered down via holding
down power button 4 sec.
again I tried, this time frugal install
as before, all semms well, then at reboot, same issue-black screen?!

so, I then rebooted with cd in, re-formatted ext3 and manually copied the cd contents to
the hard drive partition.
I made boot/grub folders, a menu.lst and then proceeded to manually
invoke grubster and first I tried "grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/sda1 /dev/sda"
which reported no error...
I re-booted and Same issue....damn it Jim!

I want to do a FULL install, but whats up with the black screen and no boot?
So, how can I get puppy to work right?
thanks

I installed puppy using the chainload method with grub. I was running about 7 distros at that time. I had no problems with it that I remember.

How do I do chainload method, never did that?
juat add/edit menu.lst or what?
also, I did get pupflux412 running off my usb by manually copying
cd contents to usb; usb already has grubster so I just
added this to menu.lst

title PupFlux412
kernel /boot/vmlinuz pmedia=usbflash pfix=copy
initrd /boot/initrd.gz

with usb there is no need to use "root (hd0,0)
'cause it's just sda1 and pc sees it as first hd
I have multiple distro's on single partition
4gb ext3 usb.
Big problem now...pupflux412 boots, but for some reason finds
the webserverpuppy1.sfs on my hd and not it's own pupflux412.sfs !@
why?
I then switched them, around, putting webserverpuppy.sfs on usb and pupflux412.sfs on hd and same Result-it goes and finds webserverpuppy1!!
how do I tell pupflux not to load webserverpuppy and to load itself??
any help appreciated Larry
thanks

The easiest way to chainload is to install grub to puppy's partition.

If puppy is installed just install a live cd, puppy will do and from terminal
'
>grub
root (sdx)
setup (sdx)
quit

'x' being the partition puppy is in.

Now find your boot menu lst that you use now and enter

title Puppy @ hda
chainloader (hdx,x)+1

The first 'x' following chainloader command is 0 if it is hda, the 'x' that follows is the partiton number such as hda4 would be (hd0,3). The main thing to remember is grub starts counting from 0.

OK, I finally got pupflux installed full install, now theres another
issue...
after installing I rebooted and when it loaded it loaded up the mouse wrong
and now I can't use mouse at all.
I tried rebooting and xorgwizard, but it still assumed I wanted mouse ttys0
or something and what do I do?

also, how are sessions saved in puppy hd full install?
like a reg full hd install realtime rw etc?
And, is there a performance difference between runing frugal or full install?
thanks again

First I am not sure I can help but is the mouse a usb or ps2 or wireless-usb?

On the speed things should be faster with a full install especially at boot, I am sure you can access information from a hd faster than a cd.

The main thing with a frugal install is everything can be saved in a fat or ntfs partition where as a full install needs to be ext3.

Mmmm...issues now are that I'm locked out of both puppies
for some reason after installing and supposedly saving session to hd,
at reboot it shoots into 800x600x16 with ttys0 mouse
and I have reg Imps2 mouse 2 button/wheel
Now, I can't even configure xvesa as it just starts with above, doesn't give me option for kybd or mouse....?!
and, I tried to edit xorg.conf but it says puppy auto-does that!?
what am I to do except re-install?

That would be my suggestion is to format partition and do a clean install.

When you burnt the CD using Nero, did you select 'Burn Image to CD'?
Also, if the CD was burnt correctly, IN WINDOWS, open Windows Explorer, and click on the CD icon.
In the window that opens, you should see files of syslinux, initrd.gz, vmlinux, and a Puppy file with an sfs extension.
If all you see is a file with an iso extension, it was burnt wrong.
