I am not using Puppy and I am not sure if you tried this at all or just the ones a the Puppy website. But when I run into problems I use the Tor Browser Bundle from Here which requires no installation. They list MS Windows version first, Mac OS second and Linux third.
Does not look good for Puppy since Puppy runs as root.

Linux instructions
Download the architecture-appropriate file above, save it somewhere, then run:
tar -xvzf tor-browser-gnu-linux-i686-2.2.34-3-dev-LANG.tar.gz or tor-browser-gnu-linux-x86_64-2.2.34-3-dev-LANG.tar.gz (where LANG is the language listed in the filename), and either double click on the directory or cd into it, then execute the start-tor-browser script. This will launch Vidalia and once that connects to Tor, it will launch Firefox. Do not unpack or run TBB as root.
Especially this part: Do not unpack or run TBB as root
