Programming This forum is for all programming questions.
The question does not have to be directly related to Linux and any language is fair game.

Where to start and what is worth it?

I know this is a common question which is extremely debatable but what is the best language to start with.

At present i know only web programming such as PHP and some java scripting. Reading around it seems that c,c++,java, and python are among the populars, i plan to learn c and c++ regardless, but which one would be best to start with? or which is the most path people take c -> c++ -> others and so on. well thanks

Quite a few people say that it's a good idea to start with C++ because it sets the "ground rules" for application programming and gets you into "good habits", and to tell you the truth I agree with this because I learnt some Liberty BASIC and that screwed me up real bad! From C++, then go to C and then w/e you want! I'm learning C++ at the moment, so we could be learning buddies! Peace,

It depends on what your aims are. If you want to get a high-paid programming job learn VB.NET because like it or not microsoft is here to stay.

If you want to better yourself as a programmer, Get the book "Beginning Linux Programming" and read it from cover to cover.
