whats with this function

could i get some help:
what is wrong with this function the way it is written. ive tried it on the comand line and in a script. thanks
addtwo()
{
let sum = $1 + $2
echo "the number is $sum"
}

bash is very sensitive to whitespace characters. Either use

let "sum = $1 + $2"

or

let sum=$1+$2
