Vim

Somehow I think I caused VIM to perform a find operation on a file (maybe?). Well, now whenever I type that word, it gets highlighted. How do I turn of this feature (?) ?

Thanks, from an emacs to a vim

Yeah, it's pretty easy to accidentally search for a word if you aren't used to vim; for future reference, you type / (forward slash) followed by whatever you want to search for.
