USB input when computer is locked, ubuntu

Hi,

I'm trying to write a script that takes input from a HID card reader, the only problem is that when the computer is locked the input goes to the login dialog instead of it's intended target.
Is there a way to redirect the input so that it can go to command line or another location while the computer is locked?

... which is fine for many uses, for instance if you want to use the cards as a login method. And that's why these card readers are often emulating a keyboard. Bar code scanners too, by the way.

I guess the only way is to keep the system from recognizing the card reader as a keyboard, and open the device exclusively in your particular application. However, I can't tell you how to do that exactly; it's just the general idea. Maybe the card reader can be reconfigured to emulate a generic USB/serial device instead of a keyboard?
