trying to install gtkmm - help

I am trying to install gtkmm on RH9
I have already installed libsigc++

Now, when I am trying to
./configure --prefix=/usr

I get an error that sigc++-1.2.pc cant't be found and I have to add it to PKG_CONFIG_PATH

I found my sigc++-1.2.pc in /tmp/libsigc++-1.2.5/

so I tried something like that

export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/tmp/libsigc++-1.2.5/

But when I tried to cofigure again I got the same error

How can I fix it?
How can I let pkg-config know what the search path is?

I am newbie so maybe the answer is abvious, but I just don't know it.

Thanks for help

Did you install libsigc++-dev?
Not sure of the package name.

I don't think there is anything like that.
I couldn't find it on sourceforge.net.

I think my problem has something to do with
pkg-config --variable=VARIABLENAME blahblah

but I don't know how to use it.

Usually that error means that you need to install the development package.
Debian has this package available - libsigc++-1.2-dev - I'm sure RH has it too.

Solved
It was just different location of sigc++

I had to type
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/local/lib/libsigc++-1.2.5/
(I think, because I can't double check it now)

Now I 'make'ing it and it takes really long. (10 minutes now)
I wonder if it is suppose to be like that.
