Gabber 0.8.8 install problem: Gtkmm not recognized

I'm hoping someone can answer this, since I can't google up any answers.

I'm running Debian/Woody, kernel 2.4.1.
gtkmm was installed through aptitude ( libgtkmm1.2 and libgtkmm-dev ). I tried both 1.2.8 and 1.2.10 of either, to no avail.

Error message below.
checking for libglade >= 0.11... 0.17 found
checking for GAL >= 0.3... 0.24 found
checking for gtkmm-config... /usr/bin/gtkmm-config
checking for GTK-- - version >= 1.2.5... no
*** Could not run GTK-- test program, checking why...
*** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log for the
*** exact error that occured. This usually means GTK-- was incorrectly installed
*** or that you have moved GTK-- since it was installed. In the latter case, you

Oh yeah. gtkmm-config is, in fact, located in /usr/bin. /usr/bin is, in fact, in the path.
