sort +4 in fedora

Hopefully this hasn't been posted before but I'm trying to sort an ascii data file by a certain column. On my old server the command is simple sort +4 oldfile > newfile but I'm currently using fedora 5 on my laptop (I'm overseas) and it won't work. Can anyone help?

You can use -k to choose the field you want to sort on. You can use -t to set the delimiter if needed. You can find out more with "man sort". If you post some sample data, I could show you the exact syntax.
