Programming This forum is for all programming questions.
The question does not have to be directly related to Linux and any language is fair game.

Linux (the kernel) is written mostly in C, with a little assembly thrown in here and there. The rest of the free software (and there's a lot of it) that runs on Linux is written in a variety of languages, sometimes multiple languages per program. Grab the source code for a particular project to find out which one(s).

Bingo. If you want to contribute you can contribute in any language.

Exaile the audio player, written in Python.
Azureus the BitTorrent client written in Java.
Many a useful script and app has been written in Perl.
Many a useful Gnome app has utilized Mono.

Really the choice is yours, if you want to code then first find a language you like and understand. Use it and adapt from there.

Yes, but then so is Fortran--and it is still in use.
And Unix is a VERY old design paradigm which is the foundation for Linux.
And the Von Neumann architecture is REALLY old, but everyone still uses it.

Maybe you need to tell us your real question....

Don't take offense to this, but that's a really silly question.
It's not so much about which language is newer, is more about which language is best suited for the task at hand.
The only programming languages that you cannot write and compile on a Linux system, are privatized, corporate languages (for things like CNC controllers, and some embedded mobile chipsets).
