Programmaticly getting a high quality photo from a camera

Hi,

I would like to get a high quality photo programaticly from a camera (around 1600x1050 or more). We got a canon PowerShot A620 camera, and a program called capture. It works, however the PowerShot A620 is not in stores anymore and its not possible to get more. We tried a A480, and that camera didn't work with capture.

Also a Logitech QuickCam 9000 series was tried; but it wasn't as reliable as we thought it would be. WebCam freezes with little hope of reseting.

The goal is to find a camera which we can get images periodically (any quality) for display, and a large high quality image. All programmaticly.

What options are there?
Thank you

Start from http://www.libraw.org/ , maybe you'll find a supported which is supported; maybe your camera is supported.

Most available software for communicating with digital cameras is based on libgphoto/libgphoto2. The gphoto2 website has a list of supported cameras.
Does your application require simply downloading images, or do you need it to also trigger exposures? I do not think gphoto2 provides for the latter function, nor do most cameras, AFAIK. If your requirement is to simply acquire images from the camera, I think almost any modern camera should work, since there seems to be wide standardization of communication protocols. PTP or USB Mass Storage will work with almost any camera last time I researched the subject.

Looks like this gphoto2 page may be helpful.
