OpenGL as slow as molasses

I'm not sure if this belongs in programming or software. (You tell me) I downloaded several tutorials from the Nehe Productions page. All of them run incredibly slow! For example, pressing the escape key takes 30 seconds to end the program. The rotation of the objects are very choppy and slow. I don't know if the same happens on other peoples computers, but if you are willing to test it out youselves or want the source, download lesson 6 for linux off this page
http://nehe.gamedev.net/data/lessons....asp?lesson=06
Downloads are listed at the bottom of the tutorial.
Any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting?

Did you install graphic card drivers from vendor? I think you are using generic drivers.

Do you by any chance have an ATI video card?

If so, then, Well, there's your problem!

(Don't take this as an insult toward you. I deal with ATI card frustrations daily on my own system and hate ATI for it)

If, on the other hand, you have an NVIDIA card you should be able to sort the problem out.

So, which card is it then?

try running `glxgears` and see what you get..
Quote:
49343 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9868.600 FPS
73805 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14761.000 FPS
72925 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14585.000 FPS
74313 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14862.600 FPS
73001 frames in 5.0 seconds = 14600.200 FPS
thats from a geforce ti4200

should show you if it is somthing with the code you are compiling or if it is the performance of the card/drivers in everything

Thumbs up

All right, I solved the problem. Just had to download the driver from nVidia like scoban said. I thought the kernel included the same thing with its nVidia framebuffer module. Things are waaaaaaaaaaaaay faster now! The cube rotates so fast it's like a ball. There seems to be a few bugs still. The color of the background is blue instead of black. I'm gonna look into that one tomarrow. 10 hours of sleep in 60 hours does not help problem solving.

By any chance, have you guys had any luck of using the nVidia driver as the framebuffer device for the console. I had to compile VESA support into the kernel to change my resolution. Seems like to graphics drivers running would waist space.

Good night and thank you.
