glxgears spouts out high frames per second, but moves slow as molasses...
I have a IBM Thinkpad t41. It has a ATI M300 graphics card. I downloaded the latest drivers. I uninstalled the poor excuse for a place holder SuSE put in and followed the instructions for the RPM. I am at a loss for I do not know its capabilites. Google really doesn't help do to lack of understanding. I really do not want to do something only to end up in a circle. All I can tell you is glrxinfo says ati. I used Sax2 and followed the instructions. Sometimes the screen looks fuzzy, and glxgears spouts out big numbers. If this is normal could someone please tell me
I have noticed the visual of glxgears is unrelated to the score and to the performance for 3d enabled games that come with SuSE. I am also using a Thinkpad T series, so I know what you mean, but if the game performance and FPS for glxgears isn't like 90, it is probably doing fine and just glxgears visual is being goofy.
On a side bar, do you mind letting me know what you mean by removing placeholder? Are you talking about the mesa drivers? And I assume you are using the official ATI Xorg 6.8 rpm, which drivers does it say are being used the the ATI control panel in the kmenu?
Note also that when you start glxgears, it typically will open in a small window. Maximize the window to full screen, let it run for 30 seconds, and you'll get the real FPS score.
You might want to try using a lower default color depth (eg, 16 rather than 24) to see if that makes any difference
